Our Methodology: How We Evaluate LLC Formation Services

Quick Answer

We rank LLC formation services using a 12-point checklist covering price transparency, processing time, registered agent quality, data-sharing policy, and 3-year total cost. Pricing is refreshed monthly, service reviews quarterly. Affiliate commissions do not influence rankings.

We only recommend services we have personally vetted and trust. Our editorial content is not influenced by affiliate partnerships. See our editorial policy for details.

What We Evaluate

Every LLC formation service reviewed on OnlineLLCGuide.com is scored against the same 12-point checklist. We built this checklist after forming multiple companies, reading hundreds of user complaints on Reddit, Trustpilot, and the Better Business Bureau, and stress-testing each provider with real orders.

The 12 criteria are:

  1. True base price. What you actually pay at checkout, with and without add-ons selected by default.
  2. 3-year total cost of ownership. Formation fee plus registered agent renewals plus any mandatory upsells, compared across providers.
  3. Registered agent quality. Whether the provider owns offices in all 50 states, how fast they forward legal mail, and whether they scan documents to your dashboard.
  4. Data-sharing policy. We check the privacy policy for language that permits selling or sharing customer data with marketing partners.
  5. Processing speed. Time from order placement to the provider submitting your documents to the state.
  6. Dashboard and document delivery. How quickly and cleanly you receive your stamped Articles of Organization, EIN, and operating agreement.
  7. Customer support. Phone, chat, and email response times tested with real questions.
  8. Upsell pressure. Whether the checkout flow uses dark patterns or opt-out upsells.
  9. Refund and cancellation policy. What happens if you change your mind or cancel the registered agent after year one.
  10. Privacy for owners. Whether the provider lets you keep your home address off public state records.
  11. State coverage. Whether all 50 states plus D.C. are supported with real, state-specific expertise.
  12. Independent reputation. Trustpilot score, BBB rating, and our read of the most recent 100 verified user reviews.

How We Gather Pricing Data

Every price quoted on this site is verified directly against each provider's public pricing page and checkout flow. We refresh pricing tables monthly; review pages quarterly; and state pages annually, or immediately when a state Secretary of State office announces a fee change. All prices are marked with "as of April 2026" on first mention so readers know when we last checked.

When we cannot verify a price directly because the provider hides it behind a form, we note that in the review rather than guessing.

Sources We Use

Our research draws from:

  • Trustpilot (verified reviews, not solicited)
  • Better Business Bureau (complaint history, accreditation status)
  • Google Reviews (local sentiment, repeat-issue patterns)
  • Reddit (r/smallbusiness, r/Entrepreneur: threads with at least 10 upvotes)
  • Direct first-hand testing of each service by placing a real order and tracking every step
  • Primary sources such as IRS.gov, SBA.gov, and each state's Secretary of State business filings portal

What First-Hand Testing Means

For every major provider we recommend or dismiss, we placed a live order, formed a test LLC, used the registered agent service, and tracked every interaction. We keep logs of processing times, documents received, support replies, and any upsell attempts. This is how we know, not from marketing claims, that Northwest Registered Agent delivers stamped documents within a few business days of state approval and that Bizee's registered agent upsell appears at three separate points in checkout.

How We Manage Affiliate Relationships

We earn a commission when readers sign up to Northwest Registered Agent or Bizee through our links. This does not influence how we rank or describe those services. To prove it, our top-ranked provider pays us less per signup than our second-ranked provider. We rank on total cost and service quality, not commission size.

We comply with the FTC endorsement guidelines, disclose every affiliate link clearly, and publish a standing Affiliate Disclosure on every page.

Ranking Is Not Influenced by Commission Size

Our contract with each affiliate partner is public record through the network that manages the partnership (Tidd.ly). None of our partners pay for placement. None of our partners see our reviews before publication. If a provider changes its policy in a way that makes it unsuitable (for example, if a service starts selling customer data), we update or remove the recommendation, regardless of lost commission.

Corrections and Updates

When a reader or a provider flags an error, we investigate within 72 hours. If the correction is warranted, we update the page and add a short note at the bottom describing what changed and when. See our editorial policy for the full correction process.
